BBB Announces Shredding and Electronic Recycling Event

Better Businesses Bureau (bbb.org) serving Eastern North Carolina announces today its spring “Secure Your ID” Day event will take place on Saturday, May 17, 2014. It will include document shredding, collection of computers and hard-drives for secure destruction, electric/electronics recycling and identity protection tips. The event will be from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in the parking lot of Coastal Federal Credit Union (1000 St. Albans Drive) and Lafayette Village (8480 Honeycutt Road) in front of the Executive Office Suites.

In the 2014 Identity Fraud Report by Javelin Strategy & Research, it states that in 2013 more than 13 million consumers experienced identity fraud. This is the second highest level on record. As the numbers increase, it is reported that one incident of identity fraud occurs every three seconds.

“Shredding paper documents is a key way to protect an individual’s identity. With the evolution in the digital world, however, thieves are no longer just following paper trails. It is more important than ever to be destroying and recycling electronics and our free event is the perfect opportunity to do just that,” says Toby Barfield, president and CEO of BBB serving Eastern North Carolina. “After last year’s successful addition of the Lafayette Village location, we look forward to providing even more Triangle consumers with a safe way to dispose of their sensitive documents and electronics at the spring 2014 event.”

During the event, local partners Coastal Federal Credit UnionExecutive Office Suites at Lafayette Village, ProShredA Shred Ahead and GEEP will be on hand educating consumers on protecting their identity. Individuals are encouraged to bring up to three boxes or bags of documents that have been removed from binders and up to five electric/electronic devices, such as computers, cell phones, tablets or TVs, as well as printers, fax machines, vacuums, dvd/cd players, microwaves and toasters or similar products.

The October 2013 event had more than 1,000 participants. Nearly 15,000 lbs of electronics were safely recycled, as well as nearly 40,000 lbs of documents were shredded. To date, the semi-annual “Secure Your ID” Day events have securely destroyed nearly 190,000 lbs of sensitive documents and 34,000 lbs of electronics. Additional event information is available at www.bbbshred.org.

Democrat Sig Hutchinson Announces Candidacy for Wake County Commissioner

Democrat Sig Hutchinson announces his candidacy for Wake County Commissioner.  A long time technology and communication entrepreneur, Hutchinson is the business community’s go-to person advocating for open space, parks, greenways, transportation, community health and public education across Wake County.Sig Announce

“We live in one of the most beautiful places in North Carolina and yet our past successes provide no assurance of future success,” says Hutchinson. “If we don’t start protecting the quality of life Wake County has provided us, it will slowly start slipping away. It is time for change. It is time for action.”

Hutchinson believes the current Wake County Commission is off track and action is needed with the School Board to return the public school system to the nationally recognized status Wake County once enjoyed. Focus will also be on citizens having the opportunity to choose more transportation options to avoid future congestion and gridlock. Wake County must work more closely with municipal partners toward regional planning, such as investing in the county’s magnificent parks and greenways.
“Wake County did not become the best place to live and work in America with this kind of agenda. I offer leadership based on rational, data-driven decisions that focus on competing globally in the 21st century,” Hutchinson concludes.

After more than 20 years working with Wake County on numerous agendas, Hutchinson is widely recognized for his efforts preserving open space, protecting water and air quality, expanding the greenway system and promoting multi-modal transportation. Hutchinson has successfully led six Wake County and City of Raleigh bond referendums totaling more than $280 million. Known as ‘Mr. Greenjeans,’ he has also been the driving force behind the creation of what will soon be more than 125 miles of interconnected greenways throughout the Triangle.
