FMI Releases Redefining Leadership Whitepaper

FMI Corporation, the largest provider of investment banking and management consulting to the engineering and construction industry, announces today the release of its latest whitepaper: “Redefining Leadership: Strategic Thinking in Today’s VUCA World.” It includes information gathered from interviews with more than a dozen senior executives from both design and construction companies. In addition, FMI captured input from nearly 140 industry leaders through an online survey that focused on decision making in today’s business context.

The concept of VUCA, which stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, originally gained traction in military circles as a response to the proliferation of nontraditional warfare in Afghanistan and Iraq. This concept is now resonating with an increasing number of CEOs who are trying to make sense of the challenges brought on by politics, economics, society, technology and the environment.

This paper presents one component in effectively responding to a VUCA environment – the ability to think strategically. Key highlights include:

  • Defining VUCA
  • Success factors in dealing with a VUCA environment
  • Elements of strategic thinking
  • Strategic thinking vs. strategic planning
  • Five successful tactics of strategic thinkers
