Month 6: Lunch Date with Raleigh Rescue Mission

The month of July brings to mind hot dogs, watermelon and fireworks. Yet, perhaps Garfield may be the only other one celebrating National Lasagna Month with team at Articulon.

So how do you give back to the community and honor a dinner staple? You find a local program where every donation has an immediate impact on Raleigh citizens in need.

We’re continuing to focus on unique ways each month to celebrate our 10-year anniversary through reaching out to the community on a grassroots.

The Raleigh Rescue Mission

More than 50 years of changing lives for the better
On any given day, more than 100 men, women and children call the Raleigh Rescue Mission home. In addition to providing safe housing, clients are provided with on-site medical care, job training and counseling, from basic life skills to addiction support services. They also provide preschool daycare for clients and area families. Although the mission provides emergency shelter for women with children, the majority of residents are part of an individualized rehabilitation plan that addresses the reasons why they became homeless.

During our Raleigh Rescue Mission tour it was evident the great needs of people in our community. The computer class, staffed by volunteers, was full. Outside the front doors, the two large water coolers saw a steady stream of visitors trying to stay hydrated in the heat. Chef Thomas and his kitchen team of mission residents were well under way in making lunch for about 120 people. And, we witnessed children with smiles on their faces playing outside.

Receiving no state or federal funding, Raleigh Rescue Mission is dependent on donations just like Articulon’s pans of lasagna. Leslie Millett, director of public relations, shared that they are in constant need of all the everyday things people use at home, as well as financial donations.

Brady Supplies Associates with Heat Safety App for Cell Phones

ith record-breaking temperatures endangering the health of construction workers and outdoor repair people, Brady, a company that provides energy-efficient HVAC systems and comprehensive building solutions for commercial and industrial facilities across North Carolina, sent notice to all 328 associates to download and use the OSHA Heat Safety Tool. Temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees for the next several days, which will strain some cooling systems. To keep AC systems operational, maintenance teams will often have to work on rooftops where reflected heat can significantly increase the ambient temperature.

Brady Tech at work“A technician whose body overheats is not only in danger themselves but, risks the safety of those around them,” says Pete Malone, safety director for Brady. “Falling, electrocution and injuries from mechanical equipment are some additional hazards that technicians face as a result of dehydration and heat-related illness.”

The Heat Safety App by the U.S. Department of Labor is currently available for Android and iPhone users. It allows workers and supervisors to calculate the heat index for their worksite. Based on this information, risk levels can be communicated to outdoor workers. In addition, with a simple “click,” App users can get reminders about steps to take in order to avoid heat-related illness. These include drinking enough fluids, scheduling rest breaks, planning for what to do in an emergency, adjusting work operations, gradually building up the workload for new workers, training on heat-illness signs and symptoms, and monitoring each other for heat-related illness. Free of charge, the App can be downloaded from the Department of Labor website.

Malone also reminds associates that there are indoor locations where radiant energy is apt to accelerate heat exhaustion or have other dire health effects. These include machinery spaces, boiler rooms, and access spaces beneath roofs. He warns associates to be careful about using fans in these high heat areas, noting that blowing hot air on the body does not help cool it. In fact, it may actually raise a person’s core body temperature. As an alternative, Malone promotes drinking lots of cool fluids. He also advises holding ice in your mouth as it melts. This is very effective in help lower core body temperatures.

Meet the Alliance of AIDS Services-Carolinas Staff
Get Real. Get Tested.
It has been 31 years since the initial description in a Center for Disease Control (CDC) report on what we now know as HIV/AIDS. As recently as 2009, the CDC has indicated that the southern region of the U.S. has the highest new infection rate, North Carolina tops the list. What’s more is that women account for 30% of the new HIV infections, with more than 80% of them being black or hispanic.

Alliance of AIDS Services-Carolinas (AAS-C) has been providing free HIV/AIDS prevention, testing and support services across the Triangle for 12 years. The organization has expanded its public service to include testing and treatment of other sexually transmitted diseases. Since January 2012, the Raleigh office of AAS-C testing site has identified 13 new HIV infections, 20 cases of gonorrhea and 38 incidents of chlamydia.
AAS-C logoIn addition to testing at their offices, AAS-C has an on-going community program of making free testing available wherever people are — churches, public festivals, as well as teen and young-adult gatherings. In 2011, outreach efforts beyond the test sites reached 1,375 people.
To offset the cost associated with free testing, the Articulon team offered a cash donation, visited the administrative and testing staff to learn about the programs, and toured the headquarters in Ralegh.
Did you know the cost of a single test kit starts around 50 bucks? And, testing is only a portion of the services provided by AAS-C. They also assist individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and their families with food, clothing, stable housing, counseling and the identification of available medical and financial resources. This is a great service to our community.
