Each year, Business North Carolina sends ballot notices to every member of the N.C. State Bar living in North Carolina. The ballot asks one simple question: Of the Tar Heel lawyers whose work you have observed firsthand, whom would you rate as among the current best in their field of practice? Voters are not allowed to vote for themselves. They may select members of their firm, only if they pick out-of-firm lawyers in the same category, with the latter votes weighted more heavily. The top vote-getter in each category becomes a member of Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite Hall of Fame and is ineligible to win again. A complete list of winners is available in Business North Carolina’s January 2013 issue and online athttp://tinyurl.com/2013LegalElite.

NRCI = 58.1
RALEIGH, N.C. (February 12, 2013) – FMI (www.fminet.com), the largest provider of management consulting and investment banking to the engineering and construction industry, announces the release of The 2013 First Quarter Nonresidential Construction Index report. The NRCI of 58.1 is a 2.6-point improvement over the fourth quarter of 2012.
The improvement reflect fundamental bright spots in the economy. “Optimistic but not bullish” is the way one panelist described his outlook on hiring for his company in 2013. Reflective of this is that 45 percent of NRCI panelists expect to increase full-time direct employees by as much as 5 percent. Most noting that hiring will be based on current staff reaching a level of consistently over full work capacity. Only 9 percent report that they expect to decrease the number of full-time direct employees.
In addition, NRCI panelists are slightly more optimistic than last year at this time for growth in nonresidential construction. Nearly 50 percent expect modest growth for 2013, with 18.4 percent predicting that industry growth for the year could reach as high as five percent. However, backlogs for NRCI panelists are unchanged, holding steady at a median of 9 months.

RALEIGH, N.C. (January 31, 2013) — The Hunt Library on the campus of North Carolina State University opened Jan. 2, 2013. To heat and cool the facility, engineers from Affiliated Engineers partnered with Brady to design a system that uses 30 percent less energy than conventional systems. The result is two custom outside air units with dual energy recovery wheels supplying conditioned outside air to 456 chilled beam radiant panels.
Chilled-beam technology has been in use for more than 20 years across Europe. The chilled beam has no moving parts. It uses hot-and cold-water coils to heat or cool the air sent from the outside air units. One of Brady’s first forays in chilled-beam technology is the Raleigh Transit Center complex in 2009. The successful operation of that system for more than three years helped make the decision that chilled beams would be good for the new library.
“The Hunt Library is a signature building for N.C. State University,” says JD Howard, one of two project engineers from Brady. “This library will redefine the way people think a library should feel and function.” Howard goes on to say, “The flexibility of the chilled beam concept allows for the efficient heating and cooling of almost any type of space, regardless of shape, size or usage. It also is flexible in appearance. At Hunt Library, we spent a good amount of time adjusting the standard chilled beam design to achieve the look the designers desired. In doing so, the chilled beams actually blend into the space as an architectural element.”
Mechanical contractor company John J. Kirlin, LLC installed the equipment working with Brady project manager Adam Sippel. The system of chilled beams was actually commissioned into operation in July of 2012. This early commissioning not only proved the effectiveness of the system to operate in the extreme heat and humidity of North Carolina summers, it provided a comfortable work environment for the staff tasked with the responsibility of loading in the collection of 1.5 million items that make up the library’s inventory.
